4:00 – 5:00 PM - Session 2:  Internal Audits That Create Stakeholder Value: Adopting an Agile Mindset

Seniors, Scams and Identity Theft

Presenter: Steve Weisman (Margolis & Bloom)

When asked why he robbed banks, the famous bank robber, Willie Sutton, responded, “because that is where the money is.” And so it is with many seniors who’ve accumulated a lifetime of savings. But many also perceive seniors as more trusting and, therefore, more susceptible to scams. In fact, research done at Cornell University concluded that as we age, the part of the brain that alerts us when facing risky situations naturally deteriorates.  In this session, Steve Weisman will discuss scams that affect seniors in greater numbers as well as steps to avoid scams and identity theft threats.

Internal Audits That Create Stakeholder Value: Adopting an Agile Mindset

Presenter: Dr. Thomas Bell (Texas Wesleyan University)

Auditing exists in an environment of uncertainty and risk, and internal audits are meant to help organizations determine whether controls are in place that reduce risk in various operations and processes. However, there are ever-present auditing challenges such as a lack of senior management support, insufficient audit preparation time, difficult auditees and lack of time needed to write audit results. If auditing is to effectively identify inconsistencies, inefficiencies and regulatory compliance issues, relationship building is necessary through ongoing stakeholder engagement activities. A solution to this challenge is the Agile Scrum mindset.  In this session, Dr. Thomas Bell will explain agile frameworks, their principles, and how they apply to internal audit.
