Session 1: Deepfakes Complicate Identity Theft
- Presenter: Heidi Exner (Ethical Edge PI & Corporate Advisors)
Deepfake-driven identity fraud has evolved at a stunning pace, moving from simple voice cloning in 2019 to fully choreographed, multi-person video impersonations capable of pushing through multimillion-dollar transfers. One case described how criminals created a convincing video conference in which “synchronized deepfakes of the company’s chief financial officer and senior staff” persuaded an employee to authorize $25.6 million in payments. Another example showed how fraudsters impersonated Italian defense officials, using AI-generated voices to exploit urgency and patriotism. These schemes reveal how attackers now bypass technical controls entirely by manipulating trust, emotion and perceived authority. In this session, Heidi Exner will discuss identity threats that increasingly blend human and machine vulnerabilities, demanding sharper detection methods and stronger organizational defenses.

- Explain how modern deepfake-driven identity fraud schemes operate and the social-engineering tactics that enable them to succeed.
- Assess the risks associated with both human and machine identities, including biometric spoofing, credential leakage and cross-session attacks.
- Implement adaptive authentication, continuous monitoring and awareness strategies to strengthen organizational defenses against AI-assisted identity theft.
Session 2: A Proposed Framework for Assessing Cyberfraud Risk

The Six-Dimension Scorecard offers a necessary evolution of the classic Fraud Triangle to address modern cyber-enabled financial crimes. By integrating technical dimensions like anonymity and viral amplification with traditional behavioral factors, fraud examiners can better classify threats as technical, behavioral, or hybrid. This structured assessment tool helps align investigative resources and control designs with the specific nature of each incident. Applying these rubrics enables clear communication to leadership regarding why certain investigations require specialized cyber expertise while others rely on traditional methods. Using this framework leads to more consistent triage and improved risk mitigation strategies for organizations facing digital threats.
Learning Objectives:
- Analyze the components of the Six-Dimension Scorecard and their integration with the traditional Fraud Triangle to address cyber-enabled financial crimes.
- Apply the Six-Dimension scoring rubrics to categorize fraud schemes as primarily behavioral, technical, or hybrid.
- Determine appropriate investigative resources and control strategies based on risk scores derived from behavioral and technical factors.

NASBA Group Internet-Based CPEs
NASBA requires monitoring for active participation of attendees in group internet-based training to be NASBA CPE-eligible.
- Prior to the event, it is the responsibility of the attendee to acclimate with Zoom functionalities and verify their device has the appropriate Zoom version and configuration that will enable Zoom's polling feature. ACFE DC will not be responsible if the attendee's device or Zoom software is not generating Zoom's polling feature. For more information on Zoom or to request for Zoom support, visit https://www.zoom.com.
- Polling questions will be asked at irregular intervals and may be displayed for less than 60 seconds to comply with NASBA’s monitoring of active participation.
- Attendees must respond to polling questions to be eligible for CPEs. Partial CPEs may be granted based on responses to polling questions.
- Zoom handles must reconcile with the registration name of attendees. Attendees whose Zoom handles do not reconcile with their registration name (first and last names) might not be eligible for NASBA CPEs.

Cancelation Policy:
Full refunds are available anytime when requested prior to 3 days of the event. No refunds will be made for “No Shows” (a “No Show” is a person who registers for a program but who does not cancel registration or attend the program). A registered person may elect to transfer the registration to another person at any time. Cancellations can be made only by email at chapter@acfedc.org. Payments can be electronically made any time prior to the event starts. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate "pay at the door" or payment by checks or cash.
