Framed by Greed, Charged with Fraud, Redeemed by the Truth
Presenter: Alexandra Solórzano
This session will discuss a young guy, who sacrificed his life to help his grandma and disabled dad, only to be charged with fraud for allegedly stealing all the money from his grandma's bank account. This is an investigative tale that goes into the nuances of conducting thorough investigations, interviewing witnesses, verifying the facts, and going past the numbers to uncover the truth.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the importance of thorough investigation and fact-checking in uncovering the truth behind complex financial fraud cases.
- Develop skills in conducting effective interviews with witnesses and subjects, emphasizing the need to gather multiple perspectives and corroborate information.
- Recognize the value of looking beyond surface-level evidence, such as bank statements, to uncover the human elements and motivations that may influence a case.
What Started in Vegas, Didn’t Stay in Vegas
Presenter: Bill Livolsi
In a time of a personal family crisis, a fraudster took receipt of investor money on behalf of his wife (now ex-wife) and used those funds to pay off her prior investors - a decision that ultimately led to the husband’s guilty plea for wire fraud. Long before committing the fraud, there were glaring red flags in the wife’s business—and their personal life—that was missed or, worse yet, chose to ignore.
Learning Objectives:
- Examine the thought process of a fraudster to rationalize prior to committing a crime.
- Learn how fraud was executed involving romance scam, part identity theft, counterfeiting, and Ponzi scheme.
- Gain insights in the event you encounter a choice between your family or following the law.
